Demand on Limiting Children's Access to Social Media Rises

(MENAFN) Following Australia’s prohibition on children under 16 using social media platforms, a number of other countries are drafting similar legislation aimed at limiting young people’s access to social media without parental approval.

This trend reflects increasing support for restricting children’s use of these apps, as noted in recent reports.

Countries such as Italy, Spain, various US states, and South Korea are currently developing bills to regulate youth access to popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube.

According to the “Education Monitor 2025” survey conducted by the research firm Ipsos, 71% of global respondents are in favor of banning social media use among children under 14 years old.

Support was especially strong in Indonesia, France, Spain, and Colombia, where approval rates reached 87%, 85%, 84%, 82%, and 80%, respectively.

In Türkiye, 76% of participants expressed their support for the social media ban on children, ranking the country 11th among surveyed nations.

Regarding the prohibition of smartphones in schools, 55% of participants worldwide backed such a ban.

France topped the list with 80% in favor, followed by Ireland at 70%, Spain at 69%, Italy at 67%, and Peru at 65%.

In contrast, just 53% of respondents in Türkiye agreed with banning smartphones in educational settings.

Opinions on artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including ChatGPT and similar AI-driven chatbots used by children in schools, were more divided.

About 37% of those surveyed believed AI should be prohibited in classrooms, while 38% opposed a ban.
