Drone Battery Detonation Leaves Over Twenty Dead in Indonesia

(MENAFN) A suspected drone battery detonation and ensuing blaze at a seven-story office complex in Indonesia's capital Jakarta claimed at least 22 lives Tuesday—including 15 women—local media reported.

Twenty-two bodies have been recovered, comprising seven men and 15 women, Central Jakarta police chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro confirmed, according to media.

"The victims were trapped in the seven-story building when the fire broke out this afternoon," Susatyo said, according to media.

Authorities previously indicated ongoing search operations throughout the structure, concentrating on the sixth floor where access remained "particularly challenging."

Additional victims were still feared trapped.

A Tokyo-based news agency reported the location was likely the "office of an Indonesian subsidiary of Japanese company Terra Drone Corp," which provides measurement, agricultural, and other drone-based services across Southeast Asia.

The inferno is believed to have ignited following a drone battery explosion, rapidly engulfing nearly the entire structure, according to media. Emergency personnel subsequently evacuated victims who had fled to the rooftop.

A comprehensive forensic investigation will commence once the fire is extinguished.
